Una tradizione vivente

La casetta che avete ricevuto è ispirata alla caratteristica architettura Procidana.

A differenza di molte città del Mediterraneo, l’identità unica di Procida non è stata plasmata da architetti o da grandi piani urbanistici. Si è invece sviluppata naturalmente nel corso dei secoli attraverso la vita di pescatori, marinai e famiglie che hanno adattato le proprie abitazioni al paesaggio, alla comunità e alla cultura marittima dell’isola. Questo stile è conosciuto come architettura spontanea.

Uno degli elementi più riconoscibili è il vefio, un arco voltato che crea una terrazza o un balcone riparato. Costruiti tra il XVII e il XIX secolo, questi spazi diventavano veri e propri salotti all’aperto, dove le famiglie lavoravano, si riunivano e osservavano la vita scorrere sul mare.

In tutta l’isola, le case venivano costruite a livelli lungo i pendii vulcanici. I tetti diventavano terrazze, le terrazze diventavano percorsi e le scale esterne collegavano i vicini in una rete quasi labirintica che ancora oggi rappresenta una delle caratteristiche distintive di Procida.

Colori con uno scopo

Anche i colori vivaci delle case procidane avevano una funzione pratica. Il rosa, il giallo, l’azzurro e il verde aiutavano pescatori e marinai a riconoscere la propria abitazione dal mare molto prima dell’esistenza della navigazione moderna. Quella che nacque come una soluzione pratica è diventata uno dei simboli più duraturi dell’isola.

In tutto il Golfo di Napoli, molte località condividono elementi dello stesso linguaggio architettonico. Eppure, proprio come le persone, anche i luoghi hanno una propria personalità. Il carattere di Procida si esprime nell’armonia dei suoi archi, delle sue scale, delle sue terrazze e dei suoi colori.

Nessun luogo lo rappresenta meglio di Marina Corricella, il più antico borgo marinaro dell’isola, dove le case dai colori pastello scendono verso il mare come un anfiteatro naturale, dando vita a uno degli scorci costieri più iconici d’Italia.

Un regalo e un ricordo

Abbiamo scelto una casa procidana perché rappresenta lo spirito dell’isola che ci ha portati fin qui: comunità, colore e connessione. Così come le case di Procida sono state costruite vicine tra loro, anche la nostra celebrazione ha riunito familiari e amici da tutto il mondo.

Speriamo che questa piccola casa possa ricordarvi non solo Procida, ma anche i momenti e i ricordi che abbiamo condiviso qui insieme.

The House of Procida

A living tradition

The miniature house you have received is inspired by Procida’s most distinctive architectural traditions.

Unlike many Mediterranean towns, Procida’s unique character was not shaped by architects or grand urban plans. Instead, it evolved naturally over centuries through the lives of fishermen, sailors, and families who adapted their homes to the island’s landscape, community, and maritime way of life. This is known as architettura spontanea (spontaneous architecture).

One of the most recognisable features is the vefio, a vaulted arch that creates a sheltered terrace or balcony. Built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, these spaces became outdoor living rooms where families worked, gathered, and watched life unfold across the sea.

Across the island, homes were built in layers along the volcanic slopes. Roofs became terraces, terraces became pathways, and external staircases connected neighbours in a maze-like network that remains one of Procida’s defining characteristics today.

Colours with a purpose

The vibrant colours of Procida’s houses also served a practical purpose. The pinks, yellows, blues, and greens helped fishermen identify their homes from the sea long before modern navigation existed. What began as a practical solution for sailors has become one of the island’s most enduring symbols.

Across the Gulf of Naples, many towns share elements of the same architectural language. Yet, much like people, places have their own personalities. Procida’s character is found in the harmony of its arches, stairways, terraces, and colours, creating a landscape that is instantly recognisable and entirely its own.

Nowhere is this more evident than in Marina Corricella, the island’s oldest fishing village, where vibrant pastel houses cascade towards the waterfront in a colourful amphitheatre above the sea, forming one of Italy’s most iconic coastal scenes.

A gift and a keepsake

The house you are holding is also our bomboniera. In Italian culture, a bomboniera is a small gift given to guests to thank them for sharing an important life event. More than a favour, it is a lasting keepsake that preserves the memory of a special occasion and the people who shared it.

We chose a Procidan house because it represents the spirit of the island that brought us here: community, resilience, colour, and connection. Just as the houses of Procida were built close together, our celebration has brought together family and friends from different countries, cultures, and walks of life.

We hope this little house serves as a reminder not only of Procida, but also of the memories we shared here together.
